STEPHEN SUGGESTS A PLANT FOR THOSE DIFFICULT SHADY CONDITIONS IN THE GARDEN

I am often looking for a plant for a very difficult spot in the garden and one of the most difficult is dry root infested soil under a large tree. If you go around the nurseries they all would seem to be under the impression that we all live in sunny splendour and as we all know the older a garden gets the more shade we need to cope with.

A plant I have found particularly useful in these really hard conditions is an evergreen South African shrub called Mackaya bella which grows to about 3metres each way making it ideal to hide the paling fence. It has very dark green glossy leaves that would be almost enough to grow it for but in late spring it covers itself with white trumpets beautifully veined with purple. From a distance this makes the flowers look mauve.

If your local nursery doesn't have it put on some pressure and hopefully get them to order some as it should be growable from Hobart to Darwin as long as you only get mild frost or ( even better) are frost free.

Yours,

Stephen
