AUGUST ISSUE AVAILABLE NOW

Make the most of every little space

GOING UP THE WALL
Vertical gardens are all the rage, and with gardens shrinking, they're likely to remain an integral part of a cleverly designed space. Green wall expert Mark Paul demonstrates how to create a hanging garden of your own using recycled materials. Add some simple irrigation, and plants such as bromeliads and orchids, and you have a green wall to enjoy for many years.

FLOWERS FOR SHADE
Small gardens can be shady gardens, thanks to the close proximity of buildings, and not all flowers will respond to limited light conditions. So which plants deliver the goods for flower lovers? Deryn Thorpe runs through a whole host of shade-loving options.

MELON MANAGEMENT
Think your small vegie patch precludes you from growing melons and pumpkins? Think again! This simple A-frame support enables you to grow big crops on a tiny footprint, and you get double value by using the space underneath for your leafy greens. Genius!

PLANTING IN PATTERNS
At the flower show Floriade, bulbs are planted into giant displays, but the principle is the same when you're planting up a small pot or bed at home. Head gardener Andrew Forster shows how to mark out a pattern, and layer your bulbs and annuals for months of colour and interest.

LIVING ON FRESH AIR
Plants in the genus Tillandsia are remarkable for the fact they don't need a growing medium. They're known as air plants, and Professor Tim Entwisle describes the mechanics of them, and how to grow them throughout Australia - indoors, outdoors, or even on doors!

THE RIGHT CUT
Don't let a jungly, overgrown citrus tree sit there, unloved. Grab the secateurs, and return it to the healthy, compact, rounded beauty it wants to be, with Phil Dudman's lessons in pruning. The result: lots of flowers and fruit, at a level you can reach.

ALSO IN THIS ISSUE

  • Grow them in pots or up the wall - currants are an ideal crop for small, cool-climate gardens
  • Terrariums live on, and so will this mini desert landscape, if you follow a few simple rules
  • What does Jackie French let grow in old drainpipes and barren corners? It's an old toughie, warrigal greens, also known as 'native spinach'
  • The twilight years - expert advice from our vet on how to manage senility in your pets
