This genus of 7 species of aromatic herbs in the nightshade (Solanaceae) family is best known for Lycopersicon esculentum the tomato. Annuals or short-lived perennials with an erect or sprawling habit, they originate from western South America and the Galapagos Islands, and were reputedly introduced to Western civilization following the Spanish conquest of South and Central America.

ATHYRIUM

Belonging to the shield-fern (Dryopteridaceae) family, Athyrium is a genus of about 100 species of evergreen and deciduous terrestrial ferns that are widespread in the temperate and tropical zones. They are plants that like plenty of water, and when the weather is particularly hot, they will appreciate a fine misting of water sprayed on the foliage.

CANNA

The sole member of the family Cannaceae, this genus contains just 9 species of rhizomatous perennials, which are found throughout the tropics and subtropics of the Americas, and widely naturalized elsewhere. They are vigorous plants, with strong pseudostems that develop from the rhizomes and bear long leaves. The impressive flowers are colorful and bloom over a long period.
