This widely distributed carrot (Apiaceae) family genus is made up of 22 species of annuals and biennials. The plants in this genus begin as a rosette of leaves that arise from a taproot. In the first or second year, this taproot elongates into a flowering stem bearing umbels of small flowers that are usually white or pale yellow in color.
