Change to ABC2 Programming

Change to ABC2 Programming

After 30 November 2009, Gardening Australia will no longer have a repeat broadcast on ABC2 on Mondays due to the increased Children's programming on ABC2.

There are no changes to the 6:30pm Saturday and 1:00pm Sunday programs on ABC1 and don't forget you can Catch Up on iView (watch the program from the ABC iView Website), or download the entire show from the Gardening Australia website to watch any time you like.

CYCAS

The 60-odd species in this genus are ancient plants, and have been traced back to prehistoric times. Members of the cycad (Cycadaceae) family, these slow-growing woody-stemmed plants are palm-like in appearance, and are mostly natives of tropical and subtropical habitats.

AGAVE

The type genus for the agave (Agavaceae) family is a group of some 225 species of fleshy-leafed perennials found from southern USA through the Caribbean and Central America to Venezuela and Colombia. The genus name comes from the Greek agavos, meaning stately or noble. Some species take decades to bloom, hence the common name of century plant, though many flower in 8 to 25 years in ideal conditions.

Horticultural Media Association Australia Awards

Horticultural Media Association Australia Awards

GARDENING AUSTRALIA AT THE HMAA AWARDS

The Horticultural Media Association Australia Awards were held on Thursday 29 October and Gardening Australia was happy to be presented with the following awards:

  1. Best story in the General category: A Singular Obsession (Jane Edmanson) about a man who's collected thousands of cactus and succulents. Produced by Neil Proud.
  2. Best episode in the Technical category: Episode 22 - Hellebores by Jane; Homemade Remedies by Colin; Starch Staples by Jerry; Rose Pruning by Sophie; Shasta Daisy Propagation by Angus.
  3. Josh Byrne was the winner in the Environmental category for his 'Creating a School Garden' series.
  4. Gardening Australia Researcher, Millie Ross, won the Anita Boucher Young Achiever of the Year Award.
  5. Colin Campbell was inducted into the HMA Hall of Fame (Gold Laurel) for his lifelong service to horticulture!

VITIS

The type genus for the grape (Vitaceae) family, Vitis is composed of more than 60 species of woody deciduous vines from the temperate Northern Hemisphere. The grape is one of the longest cultivated plants, and is mentioned in history throughout the ages. Grape varieties differ most obviously in fruit color: white, red, or black. Some are table grapes, others wine grapes, and a few are dual purpose.
