EUCOMIS

The 15 species in this genus are found mainly in the summer-rainfall eastern parts of southern Africa. They are all perennial bulbs and are members of the hyacinth (Hyacinthaceae) family. These striking plants make attractive longlasting cut flowers; they are also ideal subjects for greenhouse culture. New strains and cultivars appear regularly, ensuring their continued popularity.

ALOE

This genus, belonging to the asphodel (Asphodelaceae) family, contains more than 300 species of evergreen, fleshy-leafed, rosette-forming, sometimes treelike succulents, and is found through southern and tropical Africa to Madagascar and the Arabian Peninsula. They range from low-growing grass-like perennials to trees, shrubs, and scrambling climbers.

MUHLENBERGIA

Commonly known as muhly grass, this genus of 160 species of often spectacular grasses in the family Poaceae is native to warmer parts of North America, with a few in Asia as well. Some species are grown for their foliage, which can be bluegray, others for their flowerheads, and a few for both qualities. Strangely, for such showy plants, these grasses have only recently become appreciated as garden plants.
