Jobs for the weekend | | Cool Climate Zone - Sow lettuce seeds; you get great results if you keep the packet in the fridge for a few weeks before sowing.
- Prune lilly pilly hedges now that their growth has slowed down.
- Watch out for pear and cherry slug and dust with wood ash, flour or powdered clay if you have more than you can control by hand-picking them
Subtropical Climate Zone - It's a good month to maintain banana clumps, keeping suckers down to one main leader and two followers. Cut off and dig out excess suckers and apply a barrowload of well-rotted manure.
- When mowing your lawn, don't cut it any lower than 30mm in summer because it stresses your grass.
- If your banksias or citrus are showing signs of yellowing, apply iron chelates to the soil.
Arid Climate Zone - Top up mulch to keep weeds at bay and keep the soil and plant roots moist.
- As the hot weather kicks in, protect crops with shade-cloth and check irrigation systems and unblock drippers that may have clogged.
Temperate Climate Zone - If you're busy harvesting your stone fruit, make sure you pick up any fruit from the ground and trim their growth back as you pick to keep trees to a manageable size.
- Trim back poinsettias to keep them bushy, taking care to wear gloves, long sleeves and safety glasses to protect yourself from the caustic sap.
Tropical Climate Zone - Toss some chicken manure around the garden to boost back up some of the nutrients that wash out in the storms.
- If you have mildew on your cucumber vines, spray them with a mix of one part milk in five parts water.
- Regularly empty water reservoirs like saucers and birdbaths to stop mosquitoes from breeding.
