Jobs for the weekend | | Cool - In cool temperate areas, it's a great weekend to sow Mitsuba seeds – an unusual and aromatic Asian herb.
- April’s the perfect time for planting, so why not pop in an indigenous ground cover at your place? Your local council or nursery should have a list of suitable species.
- Give your summer flowering perennials a good haircut to tidy them up and promote both growth and blooms for next Summer.
Temperate - In warm temperate areas, tulip bulbs should go into the fridge now, ahead of planting in early May.
- Divide clumping perennials like Irises, Clivia and daylilies by lifting the existing root-ball, trimming the foliage right back, and splitting the plant.
- In pots or in your patch, find a warm, sunny spot and give some coriander a crack.
Subtropical - Sub-tropical gardeners – it’s time to give your pelargoniums a haircut to keep them bushy and flowering well. Why not try to strike some of the cuttings while you’re at it?
- Treat your citrus trees with some tucker - whack a small handful of chook manure under the mulch and water in well.
- Give your turf a good aerate this weekend, ahead of Autumn and Winter rains.
Tropical - If you’re in the tropics, stay on top of weeds in your patch – the weather means they can really rocket away.
- Watermelons and Rockmelons are ready to roll now – direct sow the seed, ensuring they have room to grow.
- Why not try something a little different and grow a Mushroom Plant (Rungia klossii)? A quick grower in tropical areas, the raw leaves have a delicious mushroom flavour.
Arid - In Australia's Arid areas, prepare to plant a Citrus – select a sunny spot, remove grass or weeds, incorporate some compost and manures and dig it all over.
- Improve your dormant vegie patch ahead of next season with a green manure crop, including oats, wheat, buckwheat and field peas.
- Sow some Silverbeet this weekend – this fast-growing leafy green does best in a sunny spot with a regular feed of worm wee.
