Weekly Gardening Action Plan

Weekly Gardening Action Plan

Many of our viewers have emailed or posted questions about fertilising their fruit trees this time of year - we hope this helps!

Tropical Zone
As dry season sets in, use a liquid fertiliser once a month when you water: Fertiliser Teas Fact Sheet

Subtropical Zone
In the subtropics you can push the climatic boundaries, growing everything from low-chill apples to the climbing cactus dragon fruit. They do have quite different fertiliser needs but all appreciate a 'tonic' at this time of the year: Soil Tonics Fact Sheet

Temperate Zone
Once your apple, quince & pear harvest is finished, apply some pelletised, organic slow-release fertiliser under the mulch. And don't forget to include calcium!: Dwarf Apples Article

Arid Zone
Be consistent with citrus. Water regularly as fruit develop and ensure you keep the nutrients up as well!: Backyard Fruit Fact Sheet

Cool Zone
A dose of organic slow-release fertiliser will set feed the soil around stone fruit in the winter. For an added boost, top with well-rotted compost or manure: Growing Stone Fruit Article

PLANT OF THE MONTH
Hailing from South Africa, proteas make fantastic feature shrubs and, with their long stems, are superb cut flowers, too. Angus Stewart runs through the three genera - Protea, Leucospermum and Leucadendron - and shares his growing tips.

PERIOD ROMANCE
Jennifer Stackhouse visits Old Wesleydale in Mole Creek, Tasmania, where a relatively young garden weaves seamlessly around 19th-century stone structures. Neatly trimmed hedges and elephant topiary sit alongside flower beds, fruit trees and striking sculpture pieces.

CRUNCH TIME
Ditch bland, shop-bought carrots and grow your own for superior sweetness and texture. Carrots are suitable for all climates, and a good crop for growing in pots and containers. And it isn't just kids who love pulling up a fresh carrot!

TREE TROUBLE
As we head into winter, it's a good time to pay attention to your trees. What are the warning signs of pest and disease activity? We show you how to do some basic health checks yourself - and how to tell it's time to call in the tree doctor.

THE ROSE SPECIAL
- Best friends
What are the best companion plants for roses? Deryn Thorpe shows how to mix roses with flowering perennials, bulbs and annuals for a stylish 'cottage garden' look.

- This won't hurt a bit
Trisha Dixon writes with passion about the joys of rose varieties that come with very few thorns, but aren't short on the qualities we covet in a rose - beauty, colour and fragrance.
