Together, let’s grow Australia’s love of gardening!   VOTE NOW   What to plant this weekend   Tropical Climate Zone Carrots Chives Silverbeet Tomatoes Subtropical Climate Zone Beetroot Chilli Eggplant Squash Arid Climate Zone Cucumber Leeks Potatoes Rocket Temperate Climate Zone  Burdock Cauliflower Kohlrabi Parsnip  Cool Climate Zone Cabbage Chicory Lettuce Parsley   Jobs for the weekend   Cool Climate Zone Collect seeds from native daisies such as Brachyscome and Xerochrysum for sowing in winter. Now’s the time of year to plant your garlic. Try soaking cloves in diluted seaweed solution overnight before planting. If you’ve got hoyas growing indoors, reduce the watering as we head into cooler weather – they prefer to be dry at this time of year. Subtropical Climate Zone If you want to try growing oca for their tasty tubers, now’s the time to plant them. Place the tubers in the crisper of the fridge for a few weeks, then plant them out, harvesting before the humidity of summer hits. Allow some of your best-performing vegetables to go to seed and store the dried seed in air-tight jars in a cool, dry, and dark place for next season. As your palms drop fronds, chop them up or shred them for instant mulch. Arid Climate Zone If it’s too dry to grow regular celery, try the native variety, Apium prostratum. It tastes like the more familiar celery and can be grown as a groundcover or in a hanging basket. Asian greens are a great crop to try from seed; they’re fast growing, low-fuss and tasty and now’s a great time to sow some! Native desert limes are a small, multi-stemmed tree. They’re vigorous, do well in arid areas, and the small, refreshing fruits are packed with nutrition and flavour, so why not find space for one in your garden! Temperate Climate Zone Everyone knows about planting trees for wildlife, but what about native grasses? They're important for native animals, and more than a few are rare or threatened.  And many make great garden plants! If your carnivorous plants have started to wither, don’t despair -they’re just going dormant for winter; just remove leaves as they die back. If you’ve had a ripper fig crop this year, why not strike cuttings and share the plant with a friend? Tropical Climate Zone Ginger and galangal can be harvested as they start to slow down. Feijoa fruit can be ruined by fruit fly, so make sure you’ve got exclusion bags on as they ripen. And did you know vanilla comes from the fruit of a climbing, epiphytic orchid? Try layering bulbs that flower at different times in a pot for a “bulb lasagne.” Indoor plants can be propagated now; spider plants and devil’s ivy are easy to strike from cuttings and pups and make great presents. If you’ve got a Billardiera scandens climber, also called a “smooth apple berry”, the fruit should be ripening now. They’re ready to eat when they’re soft, brown and the skin is translucent. Subtropical Climate Zone If you’re growing your own luffas, now’s the time to pick them. They’re best dried on the vine but rainy weather can spoil them, so harvest and dry them somewhere airy and out of the weather. Corn can be sown now for a fast-growing crop with rapid results. If you’re growing Jerusalem artichokes you can harvest the tubers. Just wait until they’ve finished flowering, and maybe stand downwind of any loved ones after eating them. Arid Climate Zone If you’re finding slaters are ring barking tender seedlings, put out a hollowed-out orange half overnight. It’s a perfect hidey hole for them so you can collect the culprits in the morning. You can sow beetroot seeds now, and you’ll get best results is you soak the woody seeds in water overnight. Okra seedlings can be planted out – stand back and watch them rocket along! Just remember to harvest them when they’re small, before they get too big and tough. Temperate Climate Zone Cold-sensitive orchids such as Cattleyas should be moved under cover or inside now. Check and mark the location of your murnong yams and chocolate lilies so you don’t forget where they are as they die down over winter. Now’s a good time to take cuttings from native plants like correas, goodenias and myoporum. Tropical Climate Zone Scale can often pop up at this time of year. Ants will spread and farm the insects to harvest their honeydew secretions, so break the chain by putting a barrier ring of petroleum jelly around the base of the tree to deter the ants reaching the scale. Remove banana suckers, remembering you want one central leader and two understudies – and no more. Your local indigenous nursery will offer lots of options. Cooler weather means the chooks will be spending more time indoors, so now’s a good time give their coop a clean out. Remember mites will often congregate on perches – a wire brush is useful to get rid of them. Rake up falling leaves to use as mulch, compost or valuable leaf mould. Subtropical Climate Zone Now’s a good time to lift, divide and replant tuberous perennials; things such as ginger, arrowroot and daylilies. This will not only give them more room to grow, but it will give you more plants! If your passionfruit has mottled yellow leaves and spotted fruit, it may be infected by fungus. Spraying with a horticultural oil works and will also suppress mites. Now’s also a good time to get on top of any environmental weeds that have popped up over the warm season before they set seed. Arid Climate Zone Why not give sprouts a go? They’re nutritious and full of flavour, and all you need is some seed, a jar and fresh water. Your pawpaw may be setting fruit now that won’t ripen until spring, so make sure they’re protected from frosts. Hessian sacks or old bedsheets will work to create a microclimate if mounted on stakes around the plant. For a hardier, heat-resistant alternative to lettuce, sow endive now. Temperate Climate Zone If you’re in WA, inspect any tomato plants you still have hanging around for signs of tomato-potato psyllid, a small parasitic invasive insect. There’s more information on our website here. Get your winter brassicas started; cauliflowers, kale, broccoli… or why not try something new like spigarello? If you missed the spring cleaning, go for an autumn tidy up instead and get stuck into clearing out your garden shed-before any unwanted guests move in for winter. Tropical Climate Zone Sow coriander from seed now. They need to be constantly damp to grow well and stop them bolting to seed, but if they do flower, don’t despair-the flowers are great at attracting beneficial insects. Pull up and store any stakes you may have been using to grow your summer vegies – leaving them in the ground will cause them to rot and harbour pathogens.
