Clean your bottles, fire up the spremipomadoro and put those paste tomatoes to good use! You’ll be enjoying the taste of summer right through until next year! If you’ve got a native pepper berry, it’s time to harvest and dry the fruit. The leaves are also edible but watch out! They pack a real punch! Set some beer traps to reduce the local slug population before you start putting in your cool season veggies.  Subtropical Climate Zone Get your mail orders in now for any unusual plants, as they sell out quickly at this time of year. Sow carrots from seed in a shallow ditch. If yours always come up in thick clumps, try thinning the fine seed out by mixing it with sand.  Call your local council and find out what they do with their chipped tree clippings, it's often a cheap or free source of mulch!  Arid Climate Zone Look out for spider mites. They suck sap from tender plants and will leave tell-tale “webs”. They hide on the underside of leaves and hate getting wet so, give them a good blast from with the hose. Eggplant should be fruiting heavily now – consider leaving some fruit on the plant to go yellow so you can save the seed. Autumn is the perfect time to establish citrus in arid areas, why not try something different, like a pomelo or yuzu?  Temperate Climate Zone Take some time to get your boots ready for the wet weather ahead. Beeswax works on leather and olive oil on rubber gumboots. Put indoor plants out to catch some rain for a freshen up but remember to bring them back in before they get burnt. Check your bee hotels for any opportunistic spiders that have set up shop and clear their webs with a brush to encourage them to move on.  Tropical Climate Zone If your bromeliads have finished flowering, they may start producing offsets, or “pups”. Once they’re big enough they can be divided and reared as new plants! While there’s still rain due, keep turning your compost and it will be ready to use in no time.
