| | Cool Temperature - Cool temperate gardeners, it’s a great idea to provide young and newly planted trees and shrubs with some protection from damaging winter winds using a simple shadecloth screen.
- Western Victorian traditional owners the Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung refer to this time of year as Chinnup – season of cockatoos, wildflowers and cool weather. Rug up and keep your eyes and ears peeled!
- If you’ve been keeping warm with an open fire this winter, you’ll have some ash and charcoal needing a home. Charcoal can be crushed and added to soil, while small amounts of ash can go into your compost
Warm Temperature - In warm temperate gardens, bearded irises will appreciate a good feed with an organically based fertiliser, like blood and bone. This will give them all the tucker they need to rocket into spring.
- It’s coming into camellia flowering time, so if you’ve got some of these gorgeous gals in pots, make sure you keep the water up to them to ensure an amazing August!
- If cool winter weather has you craving comfort food, there’s no better than home-grown shallots. Ready to sow now, true shallots (Allium oschaninii) are full-on flavourful, and ideal for casseroles and stews.
Subtropical - Subtropical gardeners, it’s time to tulip! Select a spot where they receive morning sunshine, pop them about 15cm deep and you’ll be set for strong plants and a stunning floral show.
- Check citrus trees for swellings on young branches and stems - the signs of gall wasp. Using a sharp knife, slice open one side of these galls to kill the wasp larvae before they hatch in spring.
- Passionfruit vines are heavy feeders, and will gobble up any goodness you can give them, so treat them to a smorgasbord of seaweed solution and compost this weekend.
Tropics - In the tropics, save some space for a Sudachi (Citrus medica). These sour citrus are commonly used as a vinegar substitute and garnish in Japan, and are proven performers in home gardens.
- If your beautiful bougainvillea has finished flowering, now’s the time to give it a haircut. Bouganvilleas flower on new growth, so a tidy and trim now will see stunning show in no time
- The Lotus Lily (Nelumbo nucifera) are in flower now. Called Dambilinggwa by the Gulumoerrgin Larrakia people of Darwin and surrounds, the fragrant blooms of this edible aquatic open in the morning, and close at night.
Arid Zones - Arid zone gardeners, if your garden wants winter colour, why not whack in a Correa or two? These tough native shrubs are sure to brighten up your world with their wonderful winter flowers.
- For those with a collection of indoor plants, it’s time for their annual check-up. Look for signs of scale, mealy bug and mites, and show your plants some TLC to help them out.
- Fried, mashed or baked, who doesn’t love a spud? It’s a great time to plant your own potato patch, so grab some certified seed potatoes from your local nursery, and you’re good to grow!
